Visiting the vet shouldn’t be stressful—for you or your pet! With a little preparation and the right approach, you can help your pet feel more comfortable and relaxed during their checkups. Here are some simple ways to make vet visits a positive experience.

1. Start with Positive Associations

Your pet should see their carrier or leash as something normal, not a signal that something scary is about to happen. Leave the carrier out at home with a comfy blanket and treats inside so they can explore it at their own pace–especially our indoor kitties. For dogs, take occasional fun trips to the clinic just to say hello and get a treat from the staff—no exam required!

2. Keep Car Rides Calm

If your pet gets nervous in the car, try taking short practice drives that don’t end at the vet. A comfy blanket, calming music, or a favorite toy can help create a more relaxed environment.

3. Use Treats and Praise

Many clinics (ours included!) offer treats, but having something familiar from home can be extra comforting. This is especially important if they have any dietary allergies. Please make sure to let us know if your pet has any allergies as soon as you come in–so we don’t end up feeding them some of our treats that may upset their stomach.

4. Stay Calm Yourself

Pets pick up on our emotions. If you’re anxious, they may be too! Use a calm, reassuring voice and avoid rushing. If your pet senses that you’re relaxed, they’ll be more likely to stay calm as well.

5. Low Stress Handling Techniques and Pre-visit Medications

Our clinic uses low stress handling and we allow you to stay with your pet while the doctor examines them and gives them their vaccinations. We also use pheromone sprays and calming noise machines in the clinic. We commonly prescribe pre-visit medications for very nervous pets, as these medications allow your pet to feel calmer and more comfortable coming to see us.

6. Schedule Smart

Try to book appointments during quieter times of the day to avoid a busy waiting room. If your pet is nervous around other animals, let us know—we’re happy to accommodate special requests, like waiting in the car until the exam room is ready or having you come directly into the exam room through a special entrance.

At the end of the day, our goal is to make vet visits a positive experience for you and your pet. If you have any concerns about stress or anxiety at the vet, reach out to us! We are always here to help
